HMAS AE2, known as the ‘Silent ANZAC’, was the first submarine to penetrate the Dardanelles strait in 1915, on the very morning ANZAC soldiers landed at Gallipoli.
The crew of the AE2 came from Great Britain as well as Australia. After the sinking of AE2 in combat, many spent time as prisoners of war in Turkey.
The AE2 Commemorative Foundation Ltd (AE2CF) aims to preserve and protect the wreck of HMAS AE2 in the Sea of Marmara and to promote its historical significance.
Commander Henry Hugh Gordon Stoker, known as ‘Dacre’, was the first submarine captain to breach the Ottoman defences in the Dardanelles.
